The Real Value of SEO

Most people have a fair idea of Search Engine Optimization being something about getting one's website or web pages ranked in the top pages of Google or Yahoo's search results. That may very well be true, but does it guarantee traffic results? In other words, will users be more inclined to search those sites that appear on the first pages of search results of major search engines, or prefer to remember a site that they have tried and have experienced good results and service from? The latter is more likely to be the case for experienced users. There may be a case for new users having no knowledge about a product or service and typing in the most likely keywords in their search. In that case they would be more inclined to follow results in the first pages of the search engine results. But if your products are not up to the desired standard or do not match the perceived or required quality for international standards, then in time less and less people will approach your site. Your ranking will go down and traffic will not be directed towards your site.

Most SEO salesmen offering a company's services are inclined to give a placement guarantee stating that your product website will be placed on the first page of Google, Yahoo or other major search engines. Some even include a sampling of past client rankings to back up their claims.

While many use ranking guarantees as a sales pitch, it is seldom agreed that an SEO company in fact cannot control search engine rankings. You don't know if you are going to get 25 placements that send traffic or just 25 words that aren't competitive. In other words, the keywords can be so unique that they result in a first page ranking of your website purely on that basis, but are not a guarantee of traffic because these keywords are hardly used by people searching for the product or service that you offer. Research has found that rankings are mainly cosmetic and don't imply a good return on investment. Search engine rankings are nice to have but a return on investment in the form of traffic is what many business owners would like better.

If we want to sell someone on SEO services then it would be better to try using (a) user activity from client sites such as traffic levels from your analytics, time on site, etc. (b) conversion analysis to see if your team actually drove up conversions/sales; (c) number of pages indexed before and after work was done, and whether you were able to get more visible to searchers; (d) other specific areas of success you were able to accomplish that would be of interest to a business.

Rankings by themselves are becoming less and less important- and if you use rankings as the only measure of online marketing success then you may be in for a rude shock one day.

That's why it is important to give not only the creation of the website to an experienced website designer, but in fact get involved from the very beginning in the planning and analysis stage of website designing, right down to the final implementation and placement on the web.
